Come Together — The Beatles
Dr. Timothy Leary, the father of LSD, asked Lennon to write a song for his campaign for Governor of California. His slogan was “Come Together”.
The campaign fell through when Leary was arrested for marijuana, but this song was borne out of it.
Of note, the line “Here come ol’ flattop, he come groovin’ up slowly” was similar to a line from his hero Chuck Berry’s song, “You Can’t Catch Me” which went “Here come a flattop, he was movin’ up with me.” The owner of the song, Morris Levy, sued, and Lennon had to record three of his songs. He recorded two and was sued again.
This is a performance from Lennon’ solo days.
